Hot rolled pickled and oiled (HRPO) mild steel refers to a specific type of steel product that has undergone a multi-step manufacturing process to enhance its surface quality, improve corrosion resistance, and facilitate further processing. This process involves the following key steps:
- Hot Rolling:
- The initial stage involves hot rolling, where steel ingots or slabs are heated to elevated temperatures above their recrystallization point and passed through a series of rollers to achieve the desired thickness and shape. This hot rolling process imparts desirable mechanical properties to the steel.
- Pickling:
- Following hot rolling, the steel undergoes pickling, a chemical treatment aimed at removing surface impurities, oxides, and scale. The steel is immersed in an acidic solution, typically a dilute hydrochloric acid or sulfuric acid solution, which dissolves the surface contaminants. Next the material is processed to fully neutralise and remove all acids. This process results in a clean and uniform surface finish, free from oxide layers and other imperfections.
- Oil Coating:
- After pickling, the steel is coated with a thin layer of oil or other protective coating. This oil coating serves multiple purposes:
- It provides temporary corrosion protection by preventing the formation of rust or oxidation on the freshly cleaned surface.
- It acts as a lubricant, facilitating subsequent processing steps such as cold rolling, stamping, or forming by reducing friction between the steel surface and the processing equipment.
- It improves the surface finish of the steel, enhancing its appearance and facilitating paint adhesion in applications requiring surface finishing.
- After pickling, the steel is coated with a thin layer of oil or other protective coating. This oil coating serves multiple purposes:
Hot rolled pickled and oiled mild steel is characterized by its clean, uniform surface finish, improved weldability, and enhanced corrosion resistance compared to untreated hot rolled steel. It is widely used in various industries, including automotive, construction, manufacturing, and fabrication, where high-quality surface finish and corrosion resistance are essential requirements. Additionally, the oil coating can be easily removed using degreasing processes if necessary for specific applications.
